Getting to become a dentist can be a long journey, requiring at least eight years of undergraduate study followed by four years in a Commission on Dental Accreditation (CoDA) recognized dental school. After graduating, the dentist will receive a doctorate in dental surgery (DDS) or dental medicine (DMD), with both degrees offering the same scope of practice. Aside from continuing education, dentists must pass a National Board Examination to earn their license to practice. They must also renew their license annually.
